THE WEEK AT A GLANCE

SEPTEMBER 11 AND THE CONSPIRACY THEORISTS
By Avi Davis

One of the more fascinating features of every September 11 over the past seven years, has been the extent to which the 9/11 deniers are given their moment in the limelight.  This is the time of the year when every crank who has an alternative theory about the most heinous attack the United States has endured since the Second World War, is given a chance to speak his mind.   You know them by now - the conspiracy theorists, the anti-American agitators and even certain libertarians who believe that the 9/11 was an inside job - “ an operation”  conducted by the U.S. military- industrial complex , a government coordinated attack made to justify a Middle East invasion or simply the work of  the Mossad and its American Jewish collaborators.

One of the best known of the deniers is former Minnesota Governor and wrestling pro Jesse Ventura.  Ventura recently appeared at the Rally for the Republic Convention, a shadow convention for Libertarian supporters of Ron Paul.   Since his days as the United States’ most controversial governor, the maverick politician now makes his home in Mexico.     “ How could those buildings fall at the speed of gravity - if you put a stopwatch on them both of those World Trade Center buildings were on the ground in ten seconds - how can that be?" asked Ventura at the  Convention. "Never before in the annals of history has a fire caused a steel structure building to fall to the ground like these two did."

Ventura said he was convinced the collapses of the towers and WTC building  were too similar to the controlled demolitions of Las Vegas hotels. He apparently has experience with explosives from Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training and believes unequivocally the buildings were deliberately imploded.

Ventura was not alone in his views at the Ron Paul convention.   Among Paul’s many admirers were  advocates of the Controlled Demolition Hypothesis  The most detailed statements of this hypothesis have come from physicist Steven Jones, software engineer Jim Hoffman, theologian David Ray Griffin and author Webster Griffin Tarpley.

On September 22, 2005 Jones presented his views on the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and World Trade Center 7 at a Brigham Young University seminar attended by about 60 people. Pointing to the speed and symmetry of the collapses, the characteristics of dust jets, and reports of molten metal in the debris, Jones suggested that the evidence defies the mainstream collapse theory and favors explosive demolition. He called for further scientific investigation to test the controlled demolition hypothesis and the release of all relevant data by the government.Shortly after the seminar, Jones placed a paper "Why Indeed Did the WTC Buildings Collapse?" on the Physics Department web site.

He subsequently defended the research twice more at BYU, also at Idaho State University, Utah Valley State College, University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Denver, the Utah Academy of Science, Sonoma State University, University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Jones' paper has been completely debunked by his own peers both for its content and its claims to scientific rigor. Jones' early critics included members of BYU's own engineering faculty.  Shortly after he made his views public, the BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the faculty of structural engineering issued statements in which they distanced themselves from Jones' work. They noted that Jones' "hypotheses and interpretations of evidence were being questioned by scholars and practitioners," and expressed doubts about whether they had been "submitted to relevant scientific venues that would ensure rigorous technical peer review."

Jim Hoffman has had his day in spotlight  as well.   In a 2006 DVD collaboration, 9/11 Guilt: The Proof is in Your Hands, Hoffman produced a section entitled 'Proving Controlled Demolition of World Trade Center Building 7 and the Twin Towers. In his presentation, Hoffman offers five "features" and then five 'proofs' of demolition along with some pointed graphics. " "The Twin Towers were exploded as no buildings have been before or since and about seven hours later World Trade Center Building 7 was imploded in a classic, conventional demolition."

Christian theologian David Ray Griffin’s account of 9/11  is The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9-1.   In the book Griffin presents pieces of evidence and arguments which he believes support a conclusion that the Bush Administrtion was complicit in the September 11 attacks. Griffin also cites and analyzes the claims of others who believe the collapse of the World Trade Center was a controlled demolition.  Although Griffin previously cited researchers claiming American Airlines Flight 77 did not hit the Pentagon, his focus in the book is on the alleged demolition of the World Trade Center.

Griffin would subsequently publish The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions And Distortions.   Anyone reading Griffin’s book will immediately come to the conclusion that the author, like most conspiracists, starts with a conclusion and only then finds the evidence to support it – and not the other way around.   The book, in other words,  is not written as a dispassionate examination of facts, but as a polemic and tirade against  perceived enemies.

Many of these works recycle conclusions popularized by the granddaddy of  all 9/11 conspiracy theorists -  French journalist and political activist Thierry Meyssan. Meyssan  wrote L'Effroyable Imposture (9/11: The Big Lie), a bestseller in France and many other parts of the world .   Meyssan argues that such attacks were organized by a faction of what he calls "the US military industrial complex" in order to impose a military regime on the United States. The book was translated into 28 languages and received acclaim throughout Euorpe.  It was followed by Le Pentagate , a book published on line, which argues  that the attack against the Pentagon was not carried out by a commercial airliner but a missile.  The  book became a No.1 bestseller in Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Morocco.  For several years, Meysaan has been advocating a United Nations investigation into the 9/11 attacks.   Unsurprisingly,is only support has so far come from the U.N.’s Arab members.

It is interesting then  to take a peek at the Muslim world and see how it has processed 9/11 conspiracy theories.  According to a collection of videos assembled by  MEMRI, the Middle East Monitoring Reaserach Institute, the Muslim world is replete with major celebrities, political figures and society leaders who believe that 9/11 was an inside job and are not shy about stating it in public. Iranian President  Mahmoud Ahmadinejad consistently peppers his speeches with references to the fact that both 9/11 and the Holocaust were fabricated events and has called for an International Commission of Truth Seekers  to reveal what really occurred on 9/11.  On September 26, 2007  Mehdi Kalhor, Media Advisor to Ahmadinejad repeatedly reinforced  the Iranian line that Zionists were responsible for  the 9/11 attacks.

On March 19, 2008 former Senior Egyptian diplomat Abdallah Al-Ash'al  stated on Egyptian television  that  George W.  Bush and Ariel Sharon carried out the 9/11 attacks.  On July 24, 2008 Egyptian Actor Khaled Saleh claimed on Egyptian television that there were a number of good aspects to what occurred on 9/11 – namely that Americans would finally learn that such a thing as fear exists in the world.   On July 31, 2008,  Indian Muslim cleric Zakir Naik stated on Indian television that  9/11 was carried out by George Bush himself.  And on September 8, 2008 Egyptian Researcher Muhammad Al-Said Idris claimed on Egyptian television that because the immediate response to the  attack was so prompt and ordered, the rescuers must have known of the coming tragedy in advance.

So on and on it goes.   One thing that I have learned about conspiracy theorists over the years is that no matter what evidence you adduced, no matter how dispositive or  incontrovertible,  they can never be swayed from their  unshakeable belief in the original conspiracy.  Years ago,  I had an argument with a colleague about the JFK assassination. He was a committed conspiracist to the point where he would not read anything that offered any kind of refutation of the prevalent conspiracy theories.  He explained to me, in all seriousness, that he wouldn’t read those books, because their refutations were themselves part of the conspiracy.   There is a sociopathic element to such posturing, an innate psychological need to identify or create enemies as the focus of one’s own psychological troubles.

But as far as 9/11 is concerned, the issue transcends individual mental disturbance.  The attacks on the United States that day proved that the American hinterland was vulnerable  But that vulnerability made many anti-Americans believe that the idea of America itself  is vulnerable  - which has in turn engendered even more furious attacks.    To prove the point, it might pay to remember that the man who started it all  - Thierry Meyssan - has called  the  existence of the United States the gravest danger to world  peace and  consistently attacks what he calls“the US global supremacy project.”    In  2005,  he presided over the Axis for Peace 2005 Colloquium, which gathered over 130 participants from 37 nations in order to discuss the international situation and call  for people’s mobilization in favour of international law and world peace and against the neoconservative trend.
So are conspiracy theorists and deniers rational  and dispassionate observers of our times, free of political baggag , whose opinions and research we can believe in and trust?
You be the judge.

Three British Muslims Convicted In Plot To Murder Thousands

The British 9/11: Muslim extremists convicted of plotting to kill thousands in liquid bomb campaign-Charolette Gill

A gang of British-born Muslims were convicted yesterday of plotting a British 9/11 by blowing up liquid bombs disguised as soft drinks. Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain were accused of planning horrific attacks on planes, power stations, oil refineries and airports in their warped desire to kill thousands. Disturbing links have emerged between the group and a secretive Muslim sect which is lobbying to build Europe's biggest mosque in the shadow of the London 2012 Olympic site. Tablighi Jamaat is an ultra-orthodox movement which has its UK base in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, the home of 7/7 ringleader Mohammed Siddique Khan. Both he and fellow 7/7 bomber Shezhad Tanweer were thought to attend the mosque. Richard Reid, the shoebomber who tried to blow up a flight to America, also attended mosques run by the group. The operation to thwart Ali, Sarwar and Hussain is one of the largest ever carried out by Scotland Yard and has cost more than £20million. The three men planned to fill 500ml Lucozade and Oasis bottles with a homemade fluid concocted from hydrogen peroxide - commonly used as hair bleach - and dyed the same colour as the drink, which would have passed undetected through security scanners. When the plot was smashed in August 2006 it triggered chaos at airports as a ban on liquid containers bigger than 100ml was brought in overnight. The ban is still in force today. (Dailymail). Victims Of 9/11 Terrorist Attack On The Pentagon To Be Honoured In Dedication Of The First Memorial

Families of 9/11 victims to meet at site-Timothy Warren

The families of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon will assemble Thursday morning for the dedication of the first major memorial to the tragedy. The memorial features 184 benches over small pools of water — each bench bearing the name of a person who died. A small light in the pools will illuminate the benches at night. The benches are arranged by the victims' ages, so the first one visitors see as they enter is dedicated to Dana Falkenberg, a 3-year-old passenger on American Airlines Flight 77. The last is to retired Navy Capt. John D. Yamnicky Sr., 71, who was also a passenger on the flight. The airliner hit right below the office of Robert D. Hogue, then the deputy counsel to the Marine Corps commandant. Mr. Hogue said he watched the memorial being built outside his window "with great interest and some trepidation," because the benches are aligned to mark the flight path of the hijacked plane. "It's just kind of creepy to see," he said. Still, Mr. Hogue — now the counsel for the commandant — said he hopes the memorial's completion and Thursday's ceremony marks "an appropriate turning point for the nation," although he knows the families of those killed on Sept. 11 may never find closure. "I hope and I expect that the ceremony will be dignified and render appropriate honors to the fallen and their families," said Mr. Hogue, who had not decided whether he would attend Thursday's event. "At some point, the nation must be allowed to pay its respects and move forward, and that's where I hope we are." (washingtontimes)

Dutch Government Bans Face-Covering Burkas In Schools

Burka ban to be extended to schools

The cabinet's plans to introduce a ban on the face-covering burka is to be extended to schools and their immediate surroundings, education minister Ronald Plasterk (Labour) told MPs on Tuesday. Not only teachers, but parents and all visitors to schools, including suppliers making deliveries, will fall under the ban. Private Islamic schools will also have to comply. An estimated 100 women in the Netherlands wear the all-encompassing Islamic garment. Plasterk says it is essential for communication for teachers and schoolchildren to be able to look each other in the eye. But the ban will not immediately apply to higher education. Plasterk says he will leave it up to colleges and universities themselves to determine their policy on burkas because they work with adults rather than children. In February the cabinet said it would not be bringing in a general ban on the burka but did announce plans to ban government civil servants from wearing them. At the time it said it expected local authorities to follow suit and extend the ban to council buildings and public transport. Health minister Ab Klink is also looking at extending the ban to cover hospitals and healthcare staff. The new legislation is expected to be ready by mid-2009. DutchNews.nl

“This Is Lawfare Against US First Responders And Therefore Against The USA By The Pseudo Legal Wing Of The Global Jihad In America"

CAIR Attempts to Sabotage Law Enforcement Terrorism Training-Jim Kouri, CCP

(The following is based on material obtained by the National Association of Chiefs of Police.) The Council for American Islamic Relations has been trying in vain to stop a counter- terrorism program in Sarasota Florida, aimed at providing first responders with information on subjects such as building safety, suicide terrorism, technologies against terrorism and more. This is part of CAIR's program to stop Security Solutions International (SSI) -- an organization that has trained more than 500 Federal, State and Local agencies since 2004. SSI officials, CAIR attempted to stop a training program for cops and security personnel in Seattle last Memorial Day. Fortunately, they failed. "As Americans, we can not allow the civil liberties of our great country to be exploited by groups that are intent on creating a fundamentalist Islamic regime here in the USA", says Sol Bradman, CEO of Security Solutions International, the organizers of the Sarasota Sheriffs 3rd Annual Gulf Coast Terrorism conference being held in Sarasota from the 15th to the 19th of September for the benefit of Homeland Security professionals -- coming from as far as Australia to attend what is being called the most innovative terrorism prevention conference in the USA. "This is not about incitement against Muslims, as CAIR wants us to believe. Our mission is to protect all Americans against terrorism but also against the abuse of our laws." This is Lawfare against US First Responders and therefore against the USA by the pseudo legal wing of the Global Jihad in America," says Bradman. "The modus operandi is simple; use the freedoms and loopholes of the most liberal nation on earth to help finance and direct the world's most violent international terrorism cells," he added. Muslims In the Czech Republic Claim Islamophobia Where There Is None

Czech Muslims complaining about Islamophobia

Prague, Sept 8 (CTK) - Muslims living in the Czech Republic complain about a "steep increase in islamophobia, anti-Arabism and anti-Muslim moods" in the Czech Republic like in other western countries after terrorist attacks on the USA in 2001, the Libertas Independent Agency says in a report given to CTK Monday. The society has published the report on its website. However, Czech government's commissioner for human rights Jan Litomisky said Monday he did not consider the Czech society's allegedly negative attitude to Muslins a serious problem. "The situation of the growing hatred and xenophobia has escalated to such an extent that it is necessary to launch a national debate on the phenomenon," Lukas Lhotjan from Libertas Independent Agency says. He says that anti-Arab moods in western societies have fully replaced the former hatred towards Jews. "I don't think that we should consider it a serious problem," Litomisky, deputy chairman of the government's Council for ethnic minorities and human rights commissioner, said.
"I am afraid that they sometimes provoke these moods themselves by issuing, for instance, anti-Semitic statements," he said. (praguemonitor)

UN Rights Chief Navanethem Pillay Slams West For Threatening Not To Attend Antisemitic ‘Durban II Racism’ Conference

UN Rights Chief Knocks West for Threatening Walk-Out of 'Durban II Racism' Conference, Wins Praise from Islamic States-UNwatch

Geneva, Sept. 8, 2008 — After new UN rights chief Navanethem Pillay addressed the 47-nation Human Rights Council for the first time today, independent human rights organization UN Watch praised her “inspiring life example as an anti-apartheid advocate,” yet expressed deep concern over her remarks praising the UN’s preparations for a follow-up to the troubled 2001 Durban world conference on racism. Her defense of the Durban process was immediately hailed in the plenary by Pakistan on behalf of the Islamic states, Egypt for the African bloc, Cuba for the Non-Aligned, Russia and South Africa. Without mentioning their names, Pillay criticized the current absence in the UN deliberations of Canada, the U.S. and Israel, as well as similar threats to walk out of the already controversial April 2009 conference made by the French, U.K. and Dutch governments. “I do not believe that ‘all or nothing’ is the right approach to affirm one’s principles or to win an argument,” said Pillay. “Should differences be allowed to become pretexts for inaction, the hopes and aspirations of the many victims of intolerance would be dashed irreparably. For these reasons, I urge those governments that have expressed an intention not to participate to reconsider their position,” she said. According to UN Watch, Pillay “is shooting in the wrong direction. Why is the high commissioner aiming her fire at the world’s most tolerant democracies, instead of at racist tyrants like Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who, under the chairmanship of Muammar Qaddafi’s Libya, have already begun to hijack the conference?,” asked UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer. In her speech, Pillay praised the African states’ recent preparatory conference, held in Abuja, Nigeria on August 24-26, as “productive.” “In fact,” said Neuer, “the Abuja conference utterly failed its stated mission, and was a major setback for the anti-racism cause and millions suffering around the globe. Its concluding declaration failed to say a word for the victims of Sudan’s atrocities in Darfur, or those other African governments perpetrating ethnic violence. Instead, it explicitly attacked free speech and singled out Israel — exactly what the UN’s highest officials promised Durban II wouldn’t do. The high commissioner ought to be taking on the hijackers of the anti-racism conference, instead of the few that seek to resist them.” “We remind the high commissioner that in 2001, the most virulent and inciteful language of the Durban declaration was removed only under the pressure of European threats to walk out, as the U.S. and Israel did. So too now, the threat of Western non-participation remains the only force with the slightest chance of preventing the conference from degenerating into an out-and-out fiasco,” said Neuer. An early draft of the April conference’s outcome document, released by a UN planning committee on Friday, reserves space to include provisions adopted by the African conference in Abuja. The Abuja text calls on states “to refrain from condoning incitement to racial and religious hatred and violence under the pretext of free speech” (par 13). It also expresses “concern about the plight of the Palestinian people under foreign occupations” (par. 32). The rest of the document focuses on Western practices today and in the past against people of African descent. (UNwatch)

ACADEMIC FREEDOM

"The American Empire Is Going Down.”

The Return of Joel Beinin-Cinnamon Stillwell

So declared history professor and former president of the Middle East Studies Association, Joel Beinin, on the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center (PPJC) cable television program, “Other Voices” (watch here) last week in Palo Alto. Following an “extended leave” from Stanford University in 2006 based on what Beinin then described as the university’s “minimal institutional interest in the study and teaching of the modern Middle East,” a two-year stint as director of Middle East Studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt, and rumors earlier this year that he was to land a position as director of the Middle East Studies Center at Portland State University, Beinin is back at Stanford this Fall. If the PPJC interview was any indication, Beinin’s anti-American, anti-Israel venom remain intact. At the same time, he made a number of surprisingly candid statements not often heard from Middle East studies academics. Beinin followed up his pronouncement about the supposed demise of the “American empire” by conceding that the superpowers most likely to take America’s place, China and Russia, were hardly benign or democratic in nature, and that “people will suffer in the process.” But he seemed pleased that the “U.S. will no longer dominate the next century,” for it will “force Israel to make changes in the Middle East.” Accordingly, Beinin described Israel as “solely dependent on the U.S.” and not, as some would have it, “the tail that wags the American dog.” Beinin further skewered the Walt-Mearsheimer “Israel Lobby” hypothesis by noting that there are a number of lobbies in the U.S. and that the process is a legal and legitimate one. Beinin was similarly forthright about the problems afflicting Egypt and the tyrannical nature of the Egyptian regime, led by Hosni Mubarak. He spoke about the struggles faced by trade unions, the “dysfunctional” educational system, the persecution of the Baha’i, and the corruption of law enforcement, which, as he described it, responds to citizen complaints of any sort with arbitrary imprisonment and torture. One might wonder how Beinin justified his prestigious stint at AUC, or as described in a 2006 interview with Egypt Today, his “comfortable life in Egypt’s capital,” considering the oppressive nature of his patrons. First Amendment On Hold At San Francisco State University

San Francisco State University Puts Indefinite Hold on Outdoor Protests- Luke Sheahan

San Francisco State University is at it again. SFSU has posted a statement on its website suspending all outdoor protests. The statement reads:
The Outdoor Reservation Request Process for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 events has been postponed until further notice per University Administration. The postponement will be in effect until completion of a review of Time, Place, and Manner policies by a task force with final recommendations subject to Presidential approval by the President's Cabinet. It is the intent that the review will be completed in early summer. We apologize for any inconvenience. The College Republicans intend to hold a 9/11 memorial next week pursuant to their First Amendment rights and in defiance of the university's unconstitutional ban on outdoor events. Alliance Defense Fund attorney David Hacker wrote to SFSU on Friday explaining that the First Amendment does not allow SFSU to close down a public forum, such as the outdoor areas of the SFSU campus, unless that action is narrowly drawn to achieve a compelling state interest. A blanket ban on outdoor protests certainly does not meet this exacting standard. Hacker asked SFSU to make the following assurances in writing:
(1) that you will respect College Republicans First Amendment rights, (2) that College Republicans may conduct its 9/11 Memorial on Thursday, September 11, 2008 in Malcolm X Plaza, and (3) that SFSU has re-implemented the Outdoor Reservation Request Process and will permit all student groups on campus to reserve outdoor space for their activities. FIRE will be monitoring the situation closely as it develops. Of course, this isn't the first time SFSU has had trouble understanding its constitutional obligations regarding protests. In late 2006, the university charged the College Republicans with "attempts to incite violence and create a hostile environment" and "actions of incivility" for stomping on paper-made Hamas and Hezbollah flags. FIRE wrote to the university in January 2007, demanding that it cease its unconstitutional investigation of clearly protected expression: A public university such as SFSU should not investigate—and cannot lawfully punish—students for engaging in expression that is unquestionably protected by the First Amendment. (See Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), holding that burning an American flag as part of a political protest is expression protected by the First Amendment).
Nevertheless, SFSU President Robert Corrigan defended the investigation. Not until March 19, 2007, after another FIRE letter and two FIRE press releases, did President Corrigan announce that the College Republicans were found "not guilty." With the help of the ADF, the College Republicans sued SFSU for their treatment and for the school's speech code and U.S. Magistrate Judge Wayne Brazil issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting all the schools in the California State University System from enforcing their overbroad "civility" code. In a settlement with the College Republicans, SFSU agreed to revise its policies in accordance with the First Amendment. (TheFire.org)

UCLA Professor Resigns In Protest Due To The Amission Committee Using Race In Their Decisions

Professor Suspects UCLA Is Illegally Using Race in Admissions Decisions-Goldi Blumenstyk

A political-science professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, who says he suspects that his institution is “cheating on admissions” by illegally taking into account the race of student applicants, has resigned from a university admissions committee in protest. The professor, Tim Groseclose, who has made his suspicions public in a report he posted on his UCLA Web site, says high-ranking administrators at the university and members of the committee are “engaged in a cover up” by refusing to allow him access to data about applicants so he can investigate his concerns. He says that the university’s new “holistic” approach to evaluating students allows it to let the race of applicants carry more weight than is allowed under a constitutional amendment that California voters adopted in 1996. The percentage of black students admitted as freshmen rose sharply after the new admissions policy was adopted, in 2006. According to the Los Angeles Times, the number of entering black students edged up this fall, to 230 out of of 4,889 freshmen. In 2006, 103 black students entered as freshmen. University officials said Mr. Groseclose’s conclusions that race-conscious admissions policies played a factor failed to take into account the higher level of recruiting that the university has undertaken since then. The study is likely to add fuel to the continuing debate over affirmative action in college admissions. Ward Connerly, the Californian whose activism first led to California’s 1996 ban on the use of race in admission and whose American Civil Rights Institute is seeking to propose similar bans through ballot questions in three states this November, told the Times that the study might become grounds for a lawsuit against the university. Mr. Groseclose has been in the eye of a news-media storm before. In 2005 he was an author of a widely quoted paper that suggested most major media organizations had a liberal bias. —Chronicle.com

Diana West On Rachel’s Law

What You Can Do-Diana West-Diana West

Seven years after 9/11 come Thursday, I don't think we really know what we, as a people, are all about. Are we still fighting "terrorism"? Are we still exporting democracy? What principles have we chucked over these years? What principles have held fast? One principle that has clearly suffered over these years is that of freedom of speech. Our press may be perfectly gung-ho to press questions home about a vice presidential candidate's amniotic fluid, but they are loathe to discuss far more significant issues pertaining to matters of national security, even matters of national survival. Why? One terrible reason is the chilling effect of a nefarious practice called "libel tourism," whereby a litigious Saudi billionaire, for example, may take a US author, for example, to a British court, for example, over allegations about terror-financing, for instance, made in a US-published book, for example. Of course, I could only be talking about Rachel Ehrenfeld, whose 2003 US-published book Funding Evil became the subject of such a British suit brought by a Saudi billionaire named bin Mafouz. The first writer to fight back--all other media organizations and publishers similarly threatened have apologetically caved in, with Cambridge University Press last summer infamously shredding the book Alms for JIhad without a peep--Ehrenfeld has for four or five years now been embroiled in a costly law suit in US courts. Largely due to her efforts, the New York State Legislature unanimously passed a law protecting New York writers from defamation suits filed in foreign courts--thus recognizing that the First Amendment protections Americans enjoy cannot be trumped by foreign legal systems. “We Are Defending Islam In A Civilised Way And Are Trying To Hold Those Responsible For The Caricatures Accountable According To The Law"

French lawyers offer support for lawsuit against Danish cartoonist-Mohammad Ghazal

AMMAN - A group of French lawyers are currently studying the possibility of filing a lawsuit against Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in support of the “Messenger of Allah Unites Us" campaign. Osama Bitar, a lawyer with the campaign, said on Saturday that French lawyers have expressed their support for the campaign and its lawsuit against Westergaard, who drew inflammatory caricatures seen as insulting to the Prophet Mohammad. "The lawyers are studying the possibility of filing a lawsuit against the cartoonist in accordance with French and international law such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” Bitar, who returned from a weeklong visit to Paris on Friday, told The Jordan Times. The French lawyers in question said they are also considering contacting colleagues in other European countries to support the campaign and file separate lawsuits against Westergaard, according to Bitar. "The idea of European lawyers joining us in the campaign and supporting our efforts is tremendous. We are defending Islam in a civilised way and are trying to hold those responsible for the caricatures accountable according to the law," Bitar stressed. The 73-year-old Danish cartoonist said last week he will not appear before a court in Amman even if he receives an official notification, citing "hate remarks" by campaign organisers and insisting that he only was "doing his job." Westergaard was subpoenaed by the Amman prosecutor general in early June along with several Danish journalists and editors involved in the republication of the caricatures, which spurred worldwide protests among Muslims. UN Chutzpah, Israel Should Pay Lebanon $1 billion For 2006 War Against Terrorist Group Hizbullah

Report: UN to demand Israel pay Lebanon $1 billion-Roee Nahmias
Lebanese media say Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to instruct Israel to take responsibility for environmental damages caused by 2006 war, including oil spill following bombing of Beirut power plant

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will demand that Israel pay Lebanon $1 billion in compensation over damages caused during the Jewish state's 2006 war against Hizbullah, Lebanese media reported Saturday.
According to the report, the sum, based on World Bank appraisals, is aimed at covering the environmental and material damages caused by the Second Lebanon War, to neighboring countries as well. The fundamental part of the compensation demanded is for the damage caused to the Lebanese coast due to an oil spill following an Israeli bombing of a southern Beirut power plant, which the Lebanese said had caused "an ecological disaster."

According to the report, Ban plans to submit a report to the United Nations General Assembly at the end of the month, stating that damage Israel caused to the oil reservoir polluted Lebanon's coast, and that the pollution spread to neighboring countries, especially Syria. Ban further notes that the UN rehabilitation plan managed to clean some of the oil spill in several areas in northern Lebanon seashores. The oil spill, which was defined the greatest natural disaster in Lebanon's history, took place after Israel Air Force planes hit a power plant and caused some 110,000 oil barrels to leak into the Mediterranean Sea. The report said that the UN wants Israel to compensate the countries harmed by the oil spill and restore the environmental situation along the Lebanon coast. The Jewish state has yet to respond to the demand, despite messages conveyed in August 2007. About half a year ago, new agencies reported that the German government granted Lebanon 4.5 million euros (about $6.4 million) to help finance environmental projects and damage restoration activities following the war. Chairman Of Australian Arabic Council Calls Jew “The OffSpring Of Apes And Pigs”

Outrage over Arab leader’s remarks-Naomi Levin

THE chairman of the Australian Arabic Council (AAC) has been accused of breaching the Racial Discrimination Act with comments he made about the Hezbollah-run television station al-Manar, which continues to be broadcast in Australia. Roland Jabbour told The AJN last week that he stands by the comments he made to The Age (21/08), that in the context of Israel’s “crimes”, it was acceptable for al-Manar to call Jewish people “the offspring of apes and pigs” and to resurrect the ancient myth of blood libel. “I said you need to see those comments in the context of the State of Israel and the ongoing conflict in the region. I thought it was reasonable,” Jabbour told The AJN. He said that while he would never speak about Jewish people like that, “we need to see [the comments] as directed to the State of Israel, not directed to Jews”. He said that in broadcasting anti-Semitic and anti-Israel views into Australia, the network was exercising its right to free speech. “By supporting a station to be aired in Australia, we are not supporting the things that it says, we are simply saying that if somebody says something that we are not happy with, then that is the whole issue with freedom of expression,” Jabbour argued. The broadcaster, he said, was not supporting terrorism, but he concurred that Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist group in Australia, operated the station. Peta Jones Pellach, an expert in interfaith relations, said that Judaism does not believe free speech is an “overriding right”. “Speech is described as a powerful force that must be exercised with restraint and sensitivity,” she said. Pellach said that if Jabbour believed in free speech, he should use it for good, rather than evil. “The freedom of speech he enjoys here could much better be used to inform citizens of the Arab world, who do not have access to such information, that this is a scandalous libel and spreading it does not further the cause of the Arab people or Islam.” (AJN)

Jews Attacked In Paris On Shabbat

Three young Jews attacked in Paris on their way to synagogue

PARIS (EJP)---French police search for the aggressors of three Jewish men wearing a kippa or yarmulke who were attacked Saturday by a group of youths of similar age in Paris while walking to a synagogue for the Shabbat office. According to Raphael Haddad, head of the Union of Jewish students in France, the three victims -aged 17 and 18- were struck by stones and blows thrown by a group of ten young men, who later escaped. No anti-Semitic insult was heard, one of the three youngsters told French tv. The victims, who lodged a complaint to police, were treated in hospital. One of them is suffering from wounds at the face. A spokesman for the Interior Minister confirmed Sunday the anti-Semitic character of this attack. “We have enough elements to confirm it,” Gérard gachet, a spokesman for Interior Minister Michèle Allio-Marie said. The minister condemned «with the utmost firmness the anti-Semitic violence against young Jews going to the synagogue." A similar attack occurred in the same area of Paris’s 19th district on June 22 when Rudy Haddad, a 17-year- old Jewish man was severely injured. He too was wearing the Jewish religious head covering and was leaving a nearby synagogue after Saturday’s prayer office. The Bureau of Vigilance against anti-Semitism, a group monitoring anti-Semitic incidents in France, stressed the growing feeling of insecurity of Jews living in the Buttes de Chaumont area area in the 19th district of Paris. The group urged the French capital’s Mayor to reinforce police forces in the area in view of the upcoming Jewish High Holidays. (EJP)

Report Shows Antisemitic Incidents Up In The Ukraine In 2008

Anti-Semitism in Ukraine in 2008

TEL AVIV (EJP)---Following is a report on anti-Semitism in Ukraine in 2008, by Irena Cantorovich, from the Tel Aviv University’s Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism.

On 24 January 2008 a group of 4 persons beat Rabbi Dov-Ber Baitman, a teacher at the Jewish educational center Shiurey Torah in Dnepropetrovsk, when he walked out of the central Golden Rose synagogue after evening classes. The attackers also shouted antisemitic insults. In March 2008 it was announced that the attackers were caught. On 23 May 2008 Dmitro Groisman, a Jewish human rights activist, was beaten near his apartment building in Vinnitsa. On 3 March 2008 swastikas were painted at the 18th century burial site of Rabbi Levi Itzhak and on other gravestones at the Jewish cemetery in Berdichev. On 12 March 2008 the police arrested a 21-year-old suspect, who is a leader on a local skinhead group. He was released after 3 days, but not allowed to leave the area, came to the local synagogue and promised to pay for the damage. In June 2008 he was sentenced to a year and a half imprisonment for desecration of graves. (EJP)

So Called Palestinian Peace Partners Show Children A Map Without Israel On PA TV

PA TV: A World Without Israel-IsraelNN TV

(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) presents a new video which shows how the PA TV educates the children regarding the state of Israel. PMW monitors the Palestinian Arabic language media and schoolbooks and documents the contradictions between the image the Palestinians present to the world in English and the messages to their own people in Arabic. As can be seen in the following video, the children are taught to see a world in which the state of "Palestine" exists and replaces all of Israel. The video shows a children's quiz broadcast this week on Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority television. In their bulletin, PMW’s Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook note that the children on the TV program routinely identified every Israeli city and landmark as part of the State of "Palestine." Haifa, Ashdod and Eilat are described as Palestinian ports, the Sea of Galilee is said to be a Palestinian lake, and the area of the Palestinian state is said to be 27,000 square kilometers. In fact, the total area of Gaza and the West Bank totals 6,200 square kilometers, so the only way to come up with the larger measurement is to include undisputed Israeli territory in the calculation. The "State of Palestine" is said to border Lebanon and the Red Sea, which are Israel's borders. Marcus and Crook present a number of quotes which serve as examples from PA schoolbooks, which teach children to imagine a world without Israel: "Coastal states differ in terms of their access to water sources, such as...: states located on sea coasts with accesses to two seas, for example: Palestine and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea."[Physical Geography and Human Geography, Grade 12, p. 105]. "Palestine has a long coast facing the Mediterranean sea and a short coast on the Gulf of Aqaba." [Health and Environment Studies, Grade 8 (2003), p. 130, the Israeli city of Eilat is on the Gulf of Eilat (Aqaba) - Ed.] "... The Tiberias Lake [Sea of Galilee], in Palestine" [Physical Geography, Grade 5, p. 25]. (INN)

TERRORISM, INTERNET, JIHAD

“It Is A Blatant, Open Secret That This Attack On The Twin Towers Was Done By George Bush Himself."

Indian Muslim Cleric Zakir Naik: 9/11 Was Carried Out by George Bush Himself-MEMRI

Dr. Zakir Naik, an Indian Muslim cleric and medical doctor, speaks and writes internationally, on Islam and comparative religion. He has lectured in large U.S. cities such as Chicago and in other Western cities such as Cardiff, Wales, sometimes causing controversy. He is founder and president of the Islamic Research Foundation, which owns Peace TV and broadcasts it from Mumbai, and is also founder of the Islamic InternationalSchool in Mumbai.
Dr. Naik was quoted by the Saudi daily Arab News as saying that it is the duty of every Muslim to correct misconceptions about Islam and that there is a need to counter the anti-Islamic bias of the Western media in the aftermath of 9/11. [1]
Following are excerpts from a lecture, he gave on Peace TV on July 31, 2008.
To view this clip on MEMRI TV, visit http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/1846.htm.
"I've Got The Proof" That 9/11 Was An Inside Job
Dr. Zakir Naik: "Brother Lopez asked how I can prove that 9/11 was an inside job. I've got the proof that can defeat the proof that has been proven by the people. Just a few days back, there was an article that came in the newspaper, that 75 professors from the U.S. say and believe that 9/11 was an inside job. And in that article, it was mentioned... It came in The Times of India, I think on the 7th of September. It says that 75 professors and scientists, belonging to different universities from different parts of the U.S., believe that 9/11 was an inside job. They say that there were some politicians in the White House who engineered the destruction of the Twin Towers, and, they say, the main reason was so that they could attack, and they could have control of the oil-rich countries. Open secret, I told you.
"One of the professors, by the name of Steve Jones, says: 'We do not believe that 19 hijackers and a few men in a cave in Afghanistan could have done such a professional job alone. They could not have done it. We don't believe - and by God, we are going to come to the truth and we are going to expose - we don't believe in the theory of the government.' They don't believe in the theory of the government.
"He further goes on to say: 'We, as professors and scientists, know that the steel beam of the Twin Towers couldn't have melted at the temperature at which the jet fuel was there. There were systematic bomb explosions, which caused this to come down. Otherwise, it could not come down.'" (MEMRI)

Russia’s Jihad Problem

TROUBLE IN THE NORTH CAUCASUS
Russia’s Restless Muslim Republics-Uwe Klussmann

Although Russia is celebrating the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, it still has its own problems in the region as its Muslim republics are drifting toward a partisan war. Two policemen were killed in Russia's southern Ingushetia region when a powerful bomb went off near the building of the local interior ministry.
Last Monday, an eerie funeral procession passed through the center of Nazran in the Russian republic of Ingushetia. Hundreds of people silently crowded around the coffin of Magomed Yevloyev. The 37-year-old lawyer and founder of a Web site ( www.ingushetiya.ru) that was critical of the government was killed in police custody. The authorities said that he was shot in a police car “inadvertently” -- though the bullet was accurate enough to enter his temple. A cordon of police wearing black masks and wielding shields and rubber truncheons pressed against the mourners. The state was apparently afraid of the dead man and his relatives, who announced that they would carry out a blood vendetta, as is customary in the Caucasus.
Yevloyev’s Web site was the last free medium in this tiny, restless realm, which is only slightly larger than the US state of Rhode Island and has fewer than 500,000 inhabitants. What particularly irked the rulers there was that only a single letter (“Y”) differentiated the online address from the republic's official Web site.
Ingushetia is ruled by Murat Zyazikov, a former general in the Russian security services, who resides in an extravagant palace in the virtually deserted new capital of Magas. Zyazikov’s mission is to create jobs and stability, as he once told SPIEGEL, adding that enemies must be “put to the torch.” In private, Zyazikov likes to admit to his love of “German order and cleanliness.” But, when it comes to order, there's not much of it to be found in Ingushetia these days. While Zyazikov has his heart set on transforming Ingushetia into a “Caucasian Switzerland,” Russian security agencies view this tiny republic as the most problematic patch of turf in Russia, especially after Moscow’s military offensive against Georgia. In response to Russia’s recognition of the breakaway Georgian republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, US presidential candidate John McCain said that after Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Western countries ought to think about "the independence of the North Caucasus and Chechnya.” That would definitely be pouring oil on the fire. The Muslim Ingush once lived together with the Christian Ossetians. Then Stalin divided the territory and united the Ingush with the Chechens. In 1944, he deported both peoples to Central Asia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Ingush formed their own republic. In 1992, tensions with the Ossetians led to a bloody war. The Russians sent in 12,000 soldiers to fight on the side of the Ossetians. Thereafter, Ingushetia sank into poverty, eventually reporting an unemployment rate of 80 percent and Russia's highest birthrate. After the war in neighboring Chechnya, the region became a stronghold for armed Islamists. (SpiegelOnline)

“Anyone Who Proclaims Islamic Extremist Views Should Be Tried For Sedition, Since We Are At War With Radical Islam, Or At The Very Least, Promptly Deported.”

An American Muslim vs. Islamists-Jamie Glazov

Frontpage Interview's guest today is Khalim Massoud, the president of Muslims Against Sharia, an Islamic reform movement.
FP: Khalim Massoud, welcome to Frontpage Interview.
Massoud: Thank you.
FP: I would like to talk to you today about what kind of Muslims the U.S. government uses for its government experts. What is your view of this matter?
Massoud: My view on this subject is very simple. A great number of Muslim "experts" used by the US government are connected, in one way or another, to some kind of terrorist group. This connection is either direct or through a front organization, such as CAIR, ISNA, MPAC, etc. These "experts" almost in every case declare that their loyalties lie with Islamism and not with America. I'm not aware of every single expert ever used by the US Government, but almost every single Muslim "expert" that I know of, and that's quite a few, is an Islamist.
FP: What is the reason for this?
Massoud: The reason for this is very simple. The majority of mosques and civic Islamic organizations in America are funded by Wahhabi petro-dollars and push the radical agenda of the Muslim Brotherhood, which includes "eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God's religion [Islam] is made victorious over all other religions."
So, when the government is looking for a Muslim expert, it turns to the Muslim establishment, which is comprised of radicals, leaving out moderate Muslims by default.
FP: Moderate Muslims obviously exist in America, right? So they can be hired and heard from etc., correct? Why are most of them either silent or simply not heard from?
Massoud: Of course moderate Muslims exist in America. Religious figures like Sheikh Muhammed Hisham Kabbani of Islamic Supreme Council of America or secular figures like Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser of American Islamic Forum for Democracy do exist. It's just that those people are known to a very limited circle while Imams like Siraj Wahhaj of Muslim Alliance of North America who said that "In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing. And the only thing that will remain will be Islam." or Ibrahim Hooper of Council on American-Islamic Relations who said "I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future." are very prominent and well financed figures.
That's why government bureaucrats, who are not known for making an extra effort to begin with, fail to do their due diligence and end up following recommendations of other members of Muslim establishment to use radical Muslims as government experts.
FP: So what can be done to fix this problem?
Massoud: Every government official that hired an Islamic extremist either knowingly or without conducting due diligence should be fired along with their protégés. If there is a pattern of hiring Islamic extremists, the official should be tried for aiding and abetting terrorism. Anyone who proclaims Islamic extremist views should be tried for sedition, since we are at war with radical Islam, or at the very least, promptly deported. (Frontpagemagazine)

Could the MOSSAD Have Staged the 911 Attack? by James Buchanan

About the same time as the 911 attack, Israel was caught trying to set up a fake al Qaeda cell in Palestine. [1] One source reports “Officials from the Palestinian Authority have accused the Israeli spy agency Mossad of setting up a fake al-Qaeda terrorist cell in Gaza. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said that Israel had set up the mock cell in order to justify attacks in Palestinian areas. [BBC News - 12/8/2002]”

The Israelis want the US to be on bad terms with all Muslims. The two friendliest Muslim nations for the US today are Egypt and Saudi Arabia. If Israel wanted to ruin US relations with those countries, they would stage a large terrorist attack on the US using disgruntled Saudis and Egyptians.

As it turned out, 15 of the 911 hijackers were Saudis, 4 were Egyptians and 1 was Lebanese.

In the 1950s, the Lavon Affair was exposed. It involved Israeli MOSSAD agents planting bombs at US facilities in Egypt in an attempt to sour US-Egyptian relations. In other words, the Israelis were caught trying to do this before.

In 1967, the Israelis attacked the USS Liberty. The Israelis mass-murdered 34 Americans and wounded over 180 Americans on board that ship. The Israelis jammed five out of six communication frequencies and only stopped their attack after planes from a US aircraft carrier were ordered out to protect the Liberty. The Israelis wanted to sink the Liberty with no survivors and then blame the sinking on the Egyptians.

The 911 attack benefited Israel more than any other nation and the MOSSAD has a history of “false flag” black operations.

After the 911 attack, we were told that Osama bin Laden was responsible. Who gave us the details and info about the attack? Was it perhaps Israel? Should we really trust them for anything?

Israeli spies posing as art students were in all the same towns as the hijackers. An Israeli MOSSAD film crew videotaped the 911 attack as it happened, proving that Israel somehow KNEW in advance about 911. Stories emerged that Jews in the World Trade Center received pager alerts to stay out of the WTC that day and J[2] ewish casualties on 911 were disproportionately low given the large number of Jews working in law offices, stock brokerage firms and other businesses in the WTC.

At a minimum, Israel knew EXACTLY what was going to happen on 911, and they had a film crew in place to videotape it. They didn’t give the US an adequate warning to stop the attack, yet jackasses in our government continue to call Israel our “greatest ally” –an ally that plants the occasional knife in our back.

Radical ENVIRONMENTALISM

"People showed strong approval for other students who recycled. You would hope to see people disapprove of people who don't recycle, but they didn't disapprove," she says.

Psychologists determine what it means to think 'green'-Sharon Jayson

Those who make human behavior their business aim to make living "green" your business.
Armed with new research into what makes some people environmentally conscious and others less so, the 148,000-member American Psychological Association is stepping up efforts to foster a broader sense of eco-sensitivity that the group believes will translate into more public action to protect the planet. "We know how to change behavior and attitudes. That is what we do," says Yale University psychologist Alan Kazdin, association president. "We know what messages will work and what will not." During a four-day meeting that begins today in Boston, an expected 16,000 attendees will hear presentations, including studies that explore how people experience the environment, their attitudes about climate change and what social barriers prevent conservation of resources.
Among the yet-unpublished findings:

• Walking outside rather than inside — even for just 15 minutes — makes you feel happier, more energetic and more protective of the environment, found two studies involving 220 students conducted by psychologists at Carleton University in Ottawa. Researcher Elizabeth Nisbet suggests the findings have broader implications for well-being and mental health.

"People know outside is going to feel much better for them but underpredict how happy they're going to feel after being outside in nature even 15 minutes," she says. "The people inside overestimate their happiness about being inside. It's this error in judgment people have about how happy they are in a different environment that may explain why people don't spend more time in nature."
Behind the research
• Negative feedback can backfire. In two studies, psychologist Amara Brook of California's Santa Clara University and colleague Jennifer Crocker of the University of Michigan asked 212 undergraduates about their ecological footprint. For those not heavily invested in the environment, negative feedback about their ecological footprint actually undermines their environmental behavior, they found.
"Rather than changing their ways to protect the environment, the results of this study suggest that these (people) may give up on their efforts to protect the environment," they report.
But negative feedback for those more invested in the environment promotes more sustainable behavior, they found. (USAToday)

Africans Remain Impoverished Due To Green Activists

Green activists 'are keeping Africa poor'-Mark Henderson, Science Editor

Western do-gooders are impoverishing Africa by promoting traditional farming at the expense of modern scientific agriculture, according to Britain's former chief scientist. Anti-science attitudes among aid agencies, poverty campaigners and green activists are denying the continent access to technology that could improve millions of lives, Professor Sir David King will say today. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from Europe and America are turning African countries against sophisticated farming methods, including GM crops, in favour of indigenous and organic approaches that cannot deliver the continent's much needed “green revolution”, he believes. Speaking before a keynote lecture tonight to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, of which he is president, Sir David said that the slow pace of African development was linked directly to Western influence. “I'm going to suggest, and I believe this very strongly, that a big part has been played in the impoverishment of that continent by the focus on nontechnological agricultural techniques, on techniques of farming that pertain to the history of that continent rather than techniques that pertain to modern technological capability. Why has that continent not joined Asia in the big green revolutions that have taken place over the past few decades? The suffering within that continent, I believe, is largely driven by attitudes developed in the West which are somewhat anti-science, anti-technology - attitudes that lead towards organic farming, for example, attitudes that lead against the use of genetic technology for crops that could deal with increased salinity in the water, that can deal with flooding for rice crops, that can deal with drought resistance.” Sir David, who stepped down in December as the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, will use his presidential address to the BA Festival of Science in Liverpool to accuse governments and NGOs of confused thinking about African development. Report Shows That Children Are Happier And More Successful Growing Up In Large Families

The bigger the family the better, says Cassandra Jardine

A new report concludes that children growing up in large families are happier and more successful. Told you so, says mother-of-five Cassandra Jardine. When I tell people that I have five children, they tend to say: "Lucky you." Roughly translated, that means: "What a show-off." A generation back, large families were generally attributed to rejection of contraception; nowadays, they are considered to be a public declaration of a huge income, limitless energy and a selfish disregard for the future of the planet, to boot. None of the above is true in my case, but I'm always rather feeble in putting the case for large families any more coherently than to say that I enjoy having lots of children, however expensive and tiring they can be. Each throw of the genetic dice is a new adventure, a fascinating individual, another sometimes tiresome, usually loveable bundle of strengths and weaknesses. I didn't plan to have so many; I just couldn't bear to stop. The point about big families is that they are more than the sum of their parts - they are a microcosm of society in which the members battle for attention and the best seat in the car. The squabbles are endless, and often intense, but at the end of the day (literally) everyone has to get on with one another, because they have to share the television remote control. As such, I've always believed that large families are not just a selfish pleasure but beneficial for the country, even the world - but, until now, I've been short of ammunition for arguing my case. I'm grateful, therefore, to Sky News presenter Colin Brazier, who has spent the past five years assembling evidence that supports the idea that larger families are A Good Thing. "We are so often told about the disadvantages of large families that we have lost sight of the hidden advantages," he says. (Telegraph.co.uk)
