About the Speaker:
Staff Sergeant Brian Mast
After graduating from South Christian High School in 1999, Mr. Mast following in his father's footsteps aenlisted in the military, where he served for over 12 years. Brian's service included serving under the elite Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) as a bomb disposal expert. Being a bomb technician in this high level of special operations came with the responsibility of protecting his fellow soldiers from the war's most deadly adversary, the improvised explosive device (IED). For Mr. Mast this meant putting himself directly in the line of fire without the use of bomb suits or robots.
While on his last deployment in Afghanistan, the very last IED found by his team, resulted in catastrophic injury to Mr. Mast, which included the loss of both of his legs.
As a result of his service Mr. Mast was awarded medals for Valor, Merit, and Sacrifice which include The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart Medal, and The Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
Mr. Mast recently donned an army uniform again in a show of support for the State of Israel, when he volunteered with the Israeli Defensive Forces (IDF).
Today he is the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida's 18th Congressional District.
About the Topic:
America is in retreat. And in no other place is this as glaring as the Middle East. Many of the hard won gains achieved by American and Coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan in the first decade of this century have now been surrendered or abandoned, creating an unparalleled opportunity for radical Muslim groups to gain ascendancy in those regions. The rise of ISIS is a direct result of the vacuum left by the United States and the failure to adequately strengthen the country militarily.
What impact has this had on those countries and upon the allies of the U.S. in the region? What are the consequences of the retreat for U.S. national security? And can whatever damage that has been done be repaired?
These questions will be addressed by our fascinating speaker, an American hero who has been a witness to the terrible events unfolding before our eyes.
